My list of bands that have no business in sweet sixteen:
The Police
Queen
Van Morrison
Green Day

Just because your precious Radiohead is out now all of a sudden the bracket is boring? That's what happens when you let the Brian Glazeners of the world vote. You're face is boring!

The right picks:

The Beatles
The Beach Boys
The Doors
Interpol
Rage Against the Machine
Led Zeppelin
Nirvana
The Rolling Stones

This bracket is built of fail. It's destiny was to fail.

Think about it, you're trying to claim "THE BESTEST BAND EVAR" however you basically put up a list of "well this is what me and my 6 friends like". Not really a comprehensive list of great bands. I mean sure, there are some good ones left, but really. In 2 years Interpol probably won't even be on this list. But, you've deemed it worthy of being a possible "BESTEST BAND EVAR".

And I'll take your comment as a compliment BK.

me and ally will put our votes in later... maybe.

I'm not bored just because Radiohead is out. I get that Radiohead is polarizing. I'm more disappointed that Modest Mouse and Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio, AND Radiohead are out.

Mr. Bad Example said...

I do agree with you Taylor. MM and Arcade Fire should still be in the running.

Brian G- To appease every person that votes you would have to have a bracket of 100+ bands. At that point I'm not sure people would take the time to vote if the bracket was that massive. And even if we did decide to expand the bracket, you would then have people complain about the seeding of certain bands. It is just a lose/lose. Better to thank Taylor for coming up with an interesting idea and vote.

Oh and that was not a compliment. I do not respect your taste or knowledge of music whatsoever.

Taylor said...

And Brian G., I think you've missed the whole point of this bracket. Thanks for participating though.

Since Brian and I only disagree on two bands, here are my opinions on those votes:

Why Bob Dylan is better than the Beach Boys: The Beach Boys put out one important and revolutionary album, Pet Sounds, which is more of a landmark album than anything you're going to want to listen to on a daily basis (except for Sloop John B. I love that song.); Bob Dylan has put out some amazing albums that are addictive from beginning to end: my favorie is Blood on the Tracks. Bob Dylan had far more effect on music and remains far more relevant today. Good Vibrations is an amazing pop song but it should take more than that to be the best band ever.

Why the White Stripes are better than Nirvana: This one is admittedly a tough call. In Jack White, I see a combination of Beatles-esque song-writer combined with the virtuoso guitar playing of a Hendrix. This talent in the White Stripes and their stripped-down minimalist aesthetic is the perfect package for me. I love Nirvana and they could easily win this whole thing if for nothing more than for redeeming music which was quickly going to hell at the hands of every glam, hair, and buttrock band of the 80s. We all owe Nirvana for killing the 80s. The vote between these bands comes down to whether you want to look at the undeniable importance of Nirvana or the brilliance and sheer talent of the White Stripes. I won't be disappointed with either winning--both deserve to be here--but I have to go with the White Stripes.

Modest Mouse being out is an absolute travesty. The bracket has become so standard issue.

People make some rediculous votes. Van Morrison doesn't belong in the bracket let alone the sweet 16. I bet you all the people who voted for them, haven't actually listened to them in years.

As for the The Doors...they are quite good, but come one...better than Modest Mouse?

Is this our bracket or our parents?

My picks:

Jimi Hendrix (because i didn't need a stupid bracket to tell me that the world loves the Beatles...stop the ball washing, just because your moms had crushes on them doesn't make them great NOW)
Grandaddy (Bob Dylan's singing is either whining or mumbling, neither are good...and come on...the Beach Boys...they cruised with Charlie Manson)

Modest Mouse
Interpol

Rage Against the Machine
Pinback

Nirvana
Green Day (Rolling Stones...being old is not the same as being good..ask Bob Dylan)

ethan said...

Nirvana should defeat the White Stripes handily.

Nirvana is as good now as they ever where. Nevermind and their unplugged albums are just as easy to listen to as ever.

The White Stripes are a passing fad. Yes they are good, and I prefer them to most of the other bands on this list...but they are not nearly as consistently good as Nirvana.

As for Dylan, Beatles, Beach Boys, Police, Zeppelin, Doors...just becuase we recognize song names or see their place in rock history doesn't make them the best anymore than Babe Ruth hitting all those home runs in the 50s makes him the best.

My votes are as follows:

Beatles
Bob Dylan
The Doors
Queen
Rage
Led Zeppelin
Nirvana
Rolling Stones

When considering the impact on the American rock music culture as we know it I think these are fairly clear. I think everyone will have a hard time voting for any band over the Beatles.

Mr. Bad Example said...

Taylor- Don't disagree at all with anything you said regarding the Dylan/BB debate. I just enjoy The Beach Boys much more than I ever did Dylan. My vote has nothing to do with talent. Just personal choice. White Stripes are great, but never had the impact on me that Nirvana did. It's hard for me to listen to a White Stripes album all the way through, not so for Nirvana.

Ethan- I totally understand your argument, but I am sure you understand I do listen and could sign multiple songs from all these old bands so I guess I am not who your argument is directed at. With that said, did you know Red Dawn was the first motion picture to be given a PG-13 rating? It was given a rating of 2.23 acts of violence per minute. Just awesome.....

1) Beatles vs. Jimi Hendrix
Winner: Beatles
(Songwriting, longevity, and personality over virtuoso.)

2) Bob Dylan vs. The Beach Boys
Winner: Bob Dylan
(I hate his voice but his songwriting is the key here. It has already been noted elsewhere that BB's Pet Sounds is not enough to get them through. Why the hell did Dylan beat Weezer? The test of time perhaps? That was an upset.)

3) The Police vs. The Doors
Winner: The Police
(It boils down to the lesser of drug abusers. I'd rather vote White Reggae than push the Lizard King forward another round.)

4) Queen vs. Interpol
Winner: Queen
(They are just better. Interpol had no business getting past Simon and Garfunkel - mainly Simon. Personally, Bloc Party or Editors should have been in the 16 instead of these jokers.)

5) RATM vs. Bob Marley
Winner: Bob Marley
(I have to go with my gut. RATM stuffs Metallica any day, but how they made it past Coldplay in the first place is beyond me. RATM is so bound to the stuff they were whining about, Coldplay is timeless. But this is more about Bob Marley being such an enigmatic and inspiring gentleman. So what if he was permanently stoned?)

6) Van Morrison vs. Led Zeppelin
Winner: Led Zeppelin
(I was going to piss everyone off and vote Morisson, but then I realized that I can't understand a single word that guys sings. Love his work, but can't understand him. He's less intelligible than Robert Plant and that say A LOT!)

7) Nirvana Vs. The White Stripes
Winner: Ummm. . . draw? The WS.
(I had to pick White Stripes. This is to the chagrin of any moron thinking Nirvana killed the 80's - is that a joke? The 80's killed itself, just like Cobain.)

8) Green Day vs. Rolling Stones
Winner: Rolling Stones
(This was a bad match up. Kinda like Green Day vs. Sigur Ros. WTH? Two different languages. Oh, make that three. Unless Green Day decides to make up THEIR own language! Thinking back on the Dookie album. . . maybe they did!)

"The White Stripes are a passing fad." -Ethan

Since when do passing fads last ten years? Their first breakthough hit was back in 2001 with "Fell in Love with a Girl."

As for consistency, they've been putting out an amazing album every two years. (Elephant is their best.)

Hardly a passing fad. If you're just trying to wash Nirvana's balls that's fine (we all get it, they're good), but I don't think your flip dismissals of the White Stripes are reasonable or accurate.

Carrie Dunn said...

I agree with Taylor that Loren's entry was the best voting and commentary....

....however, I do think that it needs to be said that muses come in many forms, and maybe that form just might be drug abuse.

Loren is definitely the Nancy Reagan of this blog.

Taylor,

Quantity does not equal quality. The White Stripes are a great example of that.

They may have produced a new album every 2 years, but most of the songs on their albums are not very good. In fact they are perfectly suited for a 'Best of' album that we could all purchase and enjoy without bothering with a great deal of their stuff.

The reason I chose to use the phrase 'passing fad' is because I believe that their sound will not last. They play a super raw, unproduced sound, that frankly doesn't have the staying power. It becomes too grating after long listens.

To continue my thoughts on 'Best of' albums. I think many of the bands left on our list fit that description, where quantity doesn't equal quality.

Led Zeppelin, Dylan, Stones, Doors are all prime examples of this. They have many good songs spanning many years and albums, but their collections are also equally flawed with bad songs and in some cases bad albums.

That is the strength of Rage, Nirvana, and to a lesser extent Interpol.

Hopefully Rage will never make another album, their albums are so complete and so consistent that they don't need to add to it. They sound just as angry as the first listen. No sense in making a 'Best of' Rage CD, as with only 4 CDs and one of those being a cover CD, they have a small yet awesome library.

Nirvana has the same benefits. Nevermind, In Utero, and Unplugged offer almost wire to wire greatness. Though they have a weird skip here and there. Interpol is similar but with a few more flaws.

This highlights the travesty that was the defeat of Pinback and Modest Mouse. Both bands have mastered quality and quantity.

Taylor said...

Your "best of" argument is a good one but you apply it too broadly. Of the four bands you cite, I'd say you're half right.

Led Zeppelin is solid, song for song, at least from I through Houses of the Holy. Making a "best of" for Led Zeppelin seems impossible to me. Unless we're talking a four-disc set.

In a different way, making a "best of" for Bob Dylan just doesn't make sense. He is definitely an acquired taste so most people haven't spent any times with his albums. And really his albums lack any pop quality or hook that would lend itself to being refined into a more consumable form. Anyone having the idea of mixing and matching Bob Dylan's songs just doesn't get Bob Dylan. That being said, if you just want to listen to Like a Rolling Stone once a year and continue thinking that you know anything about Bob Dylan, be my guest; ignorance is bliss. And reagrdless, that is a great song.

Now to the point where I agree with you.

I must admit that I only have random songs and a "best of" for the Rolling Stones. But really, even if you don't like a band, don't you at least know ONE of their albums that is supposedly great. I say U2, you say Joshua Tress; I say Beach Boys, you say Pet Sounds. Where is the seminal work of the Rolling Stones? (Feel free to fill us in Brian.) It seems to me that the Rolling Stones are less concerned with putting out albums as artists but have instead over the decades built up a number of hits that makes for a damn fine concert. More power to 'em. Swagger away, but excuse me if I don't take you seriously. Their years of making music doesn't counterbalanace the fact that they should have more to show for it if they really are as good as everyone says.

I do own Morisson Hotel and a double-disc "best of" for the Doors. Really though, their hits are fewer and further between than music history remembers them. The thing with the Doors is that Jim Morisson was just fucking awesome. When they're on, it's amazing. E.g., The End; Five to One. Essentially, higher highs make for better memories from music-listeners. This is why Queen--who put out Bohemian Rhapsody, one of the best songs ever--is remembered so fondly even though they can barely even fill up a single "best of" disc.

Bottom line: Everyone's voting should actually be based on what songs or albums of each band they've actually listened to and enjoyed, irrespective of what they've heard or read about that band.

ethan said...

we should have required people to name at least 5 songs they like by the artist they voted for.

That would eliminate quite a few votes. Van Morrison...go ahead and strain yourself getting to 5.

There are several bands on this list that it takes me a while to even name 5 songs I know let alone 5 songs I would enjoy listening to regularly.

And no, I can't name 5 Bob Dylan songs.

Finally, the only Zeppelin CD I own is a best of...granted it is titled 'Best of' their early years as there is a second one...but still, no need to bother buying CDs with pictures of Zeppelins.

Taylor said...

I only voted for Van Morrison for the sake of voting against Pink Floyd. I think Brian is probably the only one here that could off the top of his head name any Van Morrison songs besides Brown Eyed Girl, Moondance, or Wild Night.

The Beatles v. Jimi Hendrix:
I'm voting for the Beatles but I'd really rather not. My only personal experience with the Beatles is listening to them on my parents oldies station growing up. I understand that they were super important and all must respect them. But I don't particularly enjoy them so there. On the other hand, all I know about Jimi Hendrix is that a lot of D-bags had his poster on their dorm room in college.

Bob Dylan v. The Beach Boys:
Again, not music I listen to. I'll go with Bob Dylan.

The Police v. The Doors:
My vote is for Modest Mouse. I really don't know/care about The Police or The Doors. People seem to be voting for The Doors so I'll go with them. But seriously, Modest Mouse.

Queen v. Interpol:
Again, this should be Arcade Fire. Is Queen really a good band or do they a couple of very popular hits? I don't get it. I do however get Interpol and they are great. So Interpol.

Rage Against the Machine v. Bob Marley:
Rage. For real. This is the last band in this competition (aside from Interpol) that I actually enjoy listening to for pure joy of their music.

Van Morrison v. Led Zeppelin:
Led Zeppelin. I mean I get it. They are a big deal but I still don't have to like them.

Nirvana v. The White Stripes:
I agree that this is a good match up. I'm going with Nirvana but it is a close call.

The Rolling Stones v. Green Day:
Blah! Green Day.

So I get that there was some anti-Radiohead backlash going on (along with the mainstream Glazeners poisoning our voting), but really, Radiohead versus Modest Mouse or the Doors would have been a much more interesting match-up to talk about. Who really loves the Police that much? Roxanne? Synchronicity? Ugh.

And Arcade Fire should be schooling Interpol right now.

In my opinion, at this point in the race some of the bands are making it based off of name value. An honest question for you folks. How often do you cycle threw your ipod and select the beatles? the beach boys? or bob dylan? If you do, then kudos to you however i'd venture to guess that 90% of us don't even have them on our ipods yet we're voting for them. So I find myself at this point voting for which band, if i was listening to kearth 101, i would know more songs from.

List off 5 songs I *must* hear from interpol and i'll get them. You've got till the deadline to change my mind on them being good.
