If you had to play a hockey game without a piece of essential gear, which piece would it be? Starting from the other direction, if you only could have three pieces of hockey gear what would they be? (Skates and a stick are the default one and two.) Here is how I would rank the order in which I would add pieces of gear.
My list:
1. Skates - At least you could check people.
2. Stick - Now you're playing hockey.
3. Shinguards - I've take more abuse through my shin guards than anywhere else.
4. Gloves - This is a close call with the shinguards. I'm not sure where you get inadvertantly hit more, the shins or your hands. Thoughts?
5. Cup - the stakes are too high.
6. Helmet - I'm really only adding helmet here because it seems logical that you have to add the helmet before you can add the cage which is really what I want to add
7. Cage - Brian is crazy but I love him.
8. Girdle - Another area that takes more abuse than the shoulder pad or elbow region.
9. Shoulder pads - Shoulder pads are great but not necessarily essential if you're not going to mix it up along the boards.
10. Elbow pads - The least essential piece of equipment.
Now here's the real question: at what point on the spectrum above, when you've shown up to a game to play, would you not play the game because you don't have the necessary gear? If I get up to the cage (No. 7 on my list) I would play. Can anyone beat that?

Actually I think I would play once I got to my gloves on my list, depending on the league. If anyone even started to take a slapshot though I would run for the hills.
You can never stop before item 5. You owe me a daughter.
my list would be different. i put cup at 10. i have only taken one puck off the junk...and while it would really, really hurt...i don't think the odds of serious injury are that great. i remember jason sliwa hitting a ball off home plate right into his junk...he said they were like mashed potatoes for weeks...but it all turned out fine.
i put shoulders at 9 behind elbows. i can take a fall on my should a whole lot easier than one on my elbow. elbows are too bony not to be covered...they are a break waiting to happen.
cage goes 8th...i might play without might not...would have to be put on the spot on this one.
girdle goes 7th...probably already out at this point.
elbows at 6
helmet at 5
knees at 4
gloves at 3
stick at 2 (though lets be honest, if i went the whole game without a stick...would anyone notice?)
skates at 1 (see number 2...same thought applies)
I think that things like shinguards and gloves are necessary and that things like a cup and a helmet give the feeling of safety that may or may not exist in reality. If you took a slapshot straight in the cup it would still drop you for quite some time. That being said, I just feel safer wearing a cup. And yes, I owe Leslie a daughter.
Ethan,
How many times have you fallen and landed on your elbow?
all the time. i think i do it instinctively. i also fall on my shoulder...but anytime i fall backwards my elbows usually go down before i can get my hands back.
